Both paths can reach those roles.

What Is the Job Outlook for Clinical Dietitians?

The hiring picture is strong. BLS expects dietitian and nutritionist jobs to rise 8% between 2025 and 2035, while the average job grows just 3%. Expect around 5,700 openings each year, and a big share will come from people retiring or leaving the field.

Behind that growth, BLS points to diet-related diseases like diabetes and heart disease, along with older Americans who want to stay healthy. Hospitals and clinics sit at the center of both trends.

What Do You Need to Become a Clinical Dietitian Now?

Getting in takes more schooling than it used to. BLS notes the RD or RDN credential now calls for a master’s degree at minimum, plus a supervised dietetic internship. After that, CDR requires a passing score on its registration exam. Licensing varies widely, since each state sets its own rules. California stands out here, with many working RDNs who hold no state license, according to the survey.

Have your credentials and ready to apply? Experience, a specialty certification, and supervisory duties are the clearest paths to a raise. When an offer arrives, weigh base pay together with differentials, overtime, and retirement benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is becoming a dietitian worth it for the money?

That depends on your benchmark. The May 2025 BLS median for every U.S. job was $50,980, well under what dietitians earn. Yet the broader group of healthcare diagnosing and treating practitioners earned $103,500. Many RDNs feel their pay lags behind the schooling the career now requires, so map out your raises early.

Are clinical dietitians paid hourly or salaried?

Salaried, in most cases.
